Do United miles expire?
No. United MileagePlus miles do not expire; United dropped its 18-month inactivity rule in August 2019 and has not reinstated it. A balance survives an idle account indefinitely. What it does not survive is devaluation — United prices awards dynamically, so miles held for years tend to buy less.
GuideDo Alaska miles expire?
No. Alaska dropped its 24-month inactivity rule in April 2023, and under the renamed Atmos Rewards program the terms state points have no expiration date and may remain in an account indefinitely. An idle Alaska balance is safe, so the only real risk to it is program devaluation.

Since April 2026, United pays by fare, status and whether you hold a United credit card: general members earn 3 miles per $1 without one and 6 with one, rising to 9 and 12 for Premier 1K. Basic Economy earns less, and nothing for general members without a card. Chase points transfer in at 1:1.

Domestic economy lands nearer 1.25 cents, and business class on Alaska's oneworld partners around 1.8 cents. Not on a date, but you can still lose them. Nectar points carry no expiry date, yet Nectar may close an account with no points earned or spent for 12 months in a row — and the points are lost with it. Scanning your Nectar card or app at Sainsbury's, Argos or eBay once a year keeps the balance safe.
