Do Avios expire?
Yes. Avios lapse after 36 months with no activity on your British Airways Club account, not on a fixed calendar date. Any single earn or spend, however small, resets the clock on your entire balance. Other Avios programs, including Iberia, Aer Lingus and Qatar, set their own inactivity windows.
GuideDo IHG points expire?
Yes. IHG One Rewards points expire after 12 months with no account activity — the shortest window among the major hotel programs. Any earning or redemption resets it. IHG Elite members and IHG One Rewards Premier cardholders, who hold Platinum Elite, are exempt and keep their points regardless.
GuideDo United miles expire?
No. United MileagePlus miles do not expire; United dropped its 18-month inactivity rule in August 2019 and has not reinstated it. A balance survives an idle account indefinitely. What it does not survive is devaluation — United prices awards dynamically, so miles held for years tend to buy less.
GuideDo Alaska miles expire?
No. Alaska dropped its 24-month inactivity rule in April 2023, and under the renamed Atmos Rewards program the terms state points have no expiration date and may remain in an account indefinitely. An idle Alaska balance is safe, so the only real risk to it is program devaluation.

Avios and AAdvantage miles land close in value — about 1p per Avios against roughly 1.5 cents per mile — so the deciding factor is usually the cash charges, because a British Airways Avios reward adds carrier charges on top of tax. Avios expire after 36 months of inactivity; AAdvantage miles after 24.
