How to earn Delta miles

Delta SkyMiles members earn 5 miles per $1 on Delta fares, rising to 7, 8, 9 and 11 with Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond Medallion status; Basic Economy earns none. Partner-airline flights earn by distance and cabin, American Express points transfer in at 1:1 and Marriott points at 3:1, and dining, Uber and shopping add more.

What are IHG points worth?

An IHG One Rewards point is typically worth about 0.55 cents, between published valuations of 0.5 and 0.6 cents, so 100,000 points come to roughly $550. Budget brands and cheap dates land nearer 0.45 cents, and better hotels or the fourth night free around 0.65 cents. The calculator converts any IHG balance into dollars, pounds and euros.

What are Alaska miles worth?

An Alaska Atmos Rewards point, formerly a Mileage Plan mile, is typically worth about 1.5 cents, so 50,000 points come to roughly $750. Domestic economy lands nearer 1.25 cents, and business class on Alaska's oneworld partners around 1.8 cents. The calculator converts any Alaska balance into dollars, pounds and euros at all three rates.

Do Nectar points expire?

Not on a date, but you can still lose them. Nectar points carry no expiry date, yet Nectar may close an account with no points earned or spent for 12 months in a row — and the points are lost with it. Scanning your Nectar card or app at Sainsbury's, Argos or eBay once a year keeps the balance safe.

Comparison

Marriott Bonvoy vs Hilton Honors

A Marriott Bonvoy point is worth more than a Hilton Honors point — about 0.73 cents against 0.4, per the published US valuations — so a Hilton balance has to be roughly twice the size to buy the same night. Both expire after 24 consecutive months of inactivity. Compare a specific night in cents per point, not balances.

Comparison

Chase vs Amex points

Pick the currency whose exclusive partners you will use. Chase alone reaches United, Southwest, World of Hyatt, IHG and Wyndham; Amex alone reaches Delta, ANA, Cathay Pacific, Qatar, Emirates and Hilton, with 16 US airlines to Chase's 10. Both move points 1:1 to Avios, Flying Blue, Aeroplan, Singapore and Virgin, and neither expires while its card stays open.
