One-way, yes: New York to London in business is 88,000 Avios off-peak on British Airways, so 100,000 covers it with 12,000 to spare. A round trip is 176,000, so you would need another 76,000 — which Amex, Chase, Capital One or Bilt points can supply at 1:1. Taxes and carrier charges are paid in cash on top.
Not until you move them. Amex Membership Rewards transfer to British Airways Avios at 1:1 in both the US and the UK, so they act as a reserve you can draw on when a seat needs more Avios than you hold. Transfers are one-way and cannot be reversed, so find the seat first and move only what the booking needs.

British Airways repriced reward flights on 15 December 2025. Long-haul economy has roughly doubled since 2021: London to New York is now 27,500 Avios one-way off-peak in economy. Older charts quoting far less are out of date, which is why every figure here comes from a dated source.

How many Avios for a flight?
It depends on distance and cabin, not a fixed price. British Airways Club prices rewards in distance bands, so since the December 2025 repricing a short-haul economy reward starts at 10,000 Avios one-way, and business on the same routes runs roughly 16,500 to 26,750. Cash taxes and carrier charges are always extra.
What are Avios worth?
One Avios is typically worth about 1p, the working figure both the UK and US reference valuations settle near, so 10,000 Avios come to roughly £100. Weak via-hub economy redemptions land nearer 0.9p, while long-haul business can reach about 1.7p. The calculator converts any balance into pounds, dollars and euros.
Avios vs AAdvantage miles
Avios and AAdvantage miles land close in value — about 1p per Avios against roughly 1.5 cents per mile — so the deciding factor is usually the cash charges, because a British Airways Avios reward adds carrier charges on top of tax. Avios expire after 36 months of inactivity; AAdvantage miles after 24.
