How to earn Avios
You earn Avios by flying and by spending. UK credit cards earn 1 to 1.5 Avios per £1 and Nectar converts at 400 to 250; in the US, Chase, American Express, Capital One, Bilt and Wells Fargo points transfer to Avios at 1:1. Hotels, car hire and other partners pay Avios too.

Marriott Bonvoy members earn 10 points per $1 at most of its hotels — 5 at Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites and Element — plus an elite bonus from 10% for Silver to 75% for Titanium and Ambassador. Marriott's co-brand cards earn up to 6 points per $1 at Marriott, and US Amex, Chase and Bilt points transfer in at 1:1.

It is the only program reaching American, Alaska, Southwest and United alongside all four major hotels, Hilton, IHG, Marriott and Hyatt. Only Accor (3:2) and Preferred Hotels (1:2) differ.

GuideDo Nectar points expire?
Not on a date, but you can still lose them. Nectar points carry no expiry date, yet Nectar may close an account with no points earned or spent for 12 months in a row — and the points are lost with it. Scanning your Nectar card or app at Sainsbury's, Argos or eBay once a year keeps the balance safe.

Hold Membership Rewards until you have an Avios booking in mind. Amex points transfer to Avios at 1:1 and never expire while you keep an MR-earning Card, so they are the flexible form of the same value. Avios lapse after 36 months of inactivity and can only be spent in Avios programs.

A Marriott Bonvoy point is worth more than a Hilton Honors point — about 0.73 cents against 0.4, per the published US valuations — so a Hilton balance has to be roughly twice the size to buy the same night. Avios and AAdvantage miles land close in value — about 1p per Avios against roughly 1.5 cents per mile — so the deciding factor is usually the cash charges, because a British Airways Avios reward adds carrier charges on top of tax. Avios expire after 36 months of inactivity; AAdvantage miles after 24.
