How many miles do flights earn?

Flights are where AAdvantage miles start. On fares American sells, members earn 5 miles for every dollar of the fare, and status multiplies it — 7 for Gold, 8 for Platinum, 9 for Platinum Pro and 11 for Executive Platinum. Basic economy earns nothing. Flights on partner airlines earn differently: by the distance flown and the class of service, not by the fare.

Which points transfer to AAdvantage?

Fewer points transfer into AAdvantage than into most airline programs. Among the major US banks only Citi sends points to American, at 1:1. Marriott Bonvoy points convert at 3 to 1, which is rarely good value but can top up a balance that is just short.

What else earns AAdvantage miles?

Outside flying, AAdvantage runs its own earning channels: the AAdvantage eShopping portal, where rates vary by retailer; AAdvantage Dining, at 1 mile per $1 for members and 5 for VIP members; and SimplyMiles, card-linked offers for Mastercard holders. Car hire with Avis and Budget earns at least 2 miles per $1, and American's co-brand credit cards earn miles on everyday spending.

Once the balance builds, what AAdvantage miles are worth puts a dollar figure on it, and the expiry rule says how long it lasts.
