The short version

American Express Membership Rewards is a flexible card currency rather than an airline balance. Points have no expiration date, but they are forfeited immediately if you close your last Membership Rewards-earning Card. They transfer to Avios at 1:1, which is where most members send them, often while a transfer bonus is running.
