Guide

Do AAdvantage miles expire?

Yes. American AAdvantage miles expire after 24 months with no earning or redemption activity, and any qualifying activity resets the clock on the full balance. AAdvantage credit-card holders and members under 21 are exempt, so their miles stay alive however long the account sits idle.

Guide

Do Hilton points expire?

Yes. Hilton Honors points expire after 24 consecutive months without eligible activity — the rule was 12 months until Hilton doubled the window. Any stay, card spend or points purchase resets the clock on the whole balance. Points never expire on a date; only inactivity loses them.

Guide

Do Amex points expire?

No. American Express states Membership Rewards points have no expiration date, and there is no inactivity rule. They are forfeited in two situations: closing your last Membership Rewards-earning Card loses unredeemed points immediately, and points can also be forfeited for an unpaid billing period.

Guide

Do Chase points expire?

No. Chase Ultimate Rewards points do not expire while the card account they sit in stays open, and there is no inactivity clock. Closing the card forfeits them, so move them to another Ultimate Rewards card or redeem them before you close it; an account Chase closes for missed payments forfeits them too.

Guide

Amex to Avios

American Express Membership Rewards points transfer to Avios at 1:1, so 10,000 points become 10,000 Avios. Transfers are usually instant once your Avios account is linked, though Amex asks you to allow up to 72 hours. Periodic transfer bonuses of roughly 15 to 30 per cent are the easiest way to boost the rate.

Tool

What can my points do?

Add your Amex Membership Rewards to your Avios, since they transfer to British Airways at 1:1, and compare the total with off-peak reward prices. A New York–London economy return is 55,000 Avios and business 176,000. The tool sorts trips into within reach now, one transfer away and not yet in reach.

What are AAdvantage miles worth?

An American AAdvantage mile is typically worth about 1.5 cents — between the two US reference valuations, which disagree here — so 25,000 miles come to roughly $375. Cheap domestic economy lands nearer 1.2 cents and international business around 1.8 cents. The calculator converts any balance into dollars, pounds and euros.

Tool

What are Hilton points worth?

A Hilton Honors point is typically worth about 0.4 cents after two consecutive devaluations, so 100,000 points come to roughly $400. Low-demand rooms land nearer 0.35 cents and aspirational resorts around 0.5 cents. The calculator converts any Hilton balance into dollars, pounds and euros at all three rates.

How to earn AAdvantage miles

American AAdvantage members earn 5 miles per $1 on American Airlines fares, rising to 7, 8, 9 and 11 with Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum status; basic economy earns none. Partner-airline flights earn by distance and cabin, and Citi points transfer in at 1:1, Marriott points at 3:1.

Guide

Chase transfer partners

Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer to 14 partners: ten airlines, including United, Southwest, British Airways, Air Canada Aeroplan and Flying Blue, and four hotel programs — IHG, Marriott, Wyndham and World of Hyatt. All are 1:1 except Hyatt, which is 4:3 from a Sapphire Preferred or Ink Business Preferred by 1 October 2026.

Guide

Comparison

Avios vs Amex Membership Rewards

Hold Membership Rewards until you have an Avios booking in mind. Amex points transfer to Avios at 1:1 and never expire while you keep an MR-earning Card, so they are the flexible form of the same value. Avios lapse after 36 months of inactivity and can only be spent in Avios programs.
